SAS Crew tips: Trondheim
I love our long layovers in Trondheim, because it’s a city filled with ancient Norwegian history and every time I’m there I get to explore it a bit more. It’s the perfect base for exploring the surrounding area.

This is Norway’s largest club and has eight bars, including a piano bar where you can join in sing-alongs, one that plays only Norwegian classics, a party bar, and a nightclub – where you can dance until you drop. It’s a bit of a maze inside and is very popular. There is a dress code and a 20+ age limit.

Nidarosdomen
This huge medieval church in the middle of Trondheim was built to commemorate the burial place of King Olav II. These days it’s the site of Olav’s Wake, a religious and cultural festival celebrating the death of Saint Olav at the Battle of Stiklestad. It’s also a mecca for fans of Norwegian black metal – the church was featured on the cover of an album by Mayhem.

Tyholttårnet
This is the only TV/radio tower in Norway that has a restaurant at the top. Catch amazing views of the entire city on the “spinning floor,” which slowly turns 360° over an hour. The food is unpretentious, with great prices.

Munkholmen
This tiny island is about 2km from the city harbor by boat and has been used as a prison, monastery, fortress, World War II anti-aircraft station and an execution site. Today, it’s a recreational area and beautiful spot to picnic. You can even take a guided tour to learn more about its history.

I almost always visit Graffi when I’m in Trondheim and my favorite dish is their burger. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed and if the weather is bad it’s the perfect spot for an indoor barbecue.

Pirbadet
If you’re up for some fun, try Norway’s biggest indoor water park, located on the Trondheim waterfront. There are swimming and fitness facilities available, all in one room, and part of the fun is watching the wild weather outside the huge window that lines the water-facing side.
